Future Vision: The Next Text

Earlier this summer, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced a plan to replace some of his state’s high school text books with free, “open source” online versions.

Such initiatives are not only a reaction to the way today’s children and future generations process information, but also provide an answer to questions of expenditure, as well as more environmentally friendly options for disseminating information. In addition, the open-source nature of the content-it is provided for free from a multitude of sources-will prove a serious threat to traditional textbook publishers. It will be hard for them to compete with educational content that is not only cheaper to obtain, but highly customizable, featuring video, interactive activities, and student-created content.

How do you feel about a world without textbooks?
